About the Ball: Major League Baseball observed four impotant dates throughout the 2002 season with patriotic red and blue laced baseballs bearing an American Flag commemorative logo, or the MLB Baseball Logo designed as an American Flag.
These baseballs were used for the Ceremonial 1st Pitch at all ball parks in games taking place on this day. It is now believed that some of these baseballs made it into game play, though that may not have been the intention.
The Memorial Day Ball is the rarest of the four 2002 "Flag Baseballs," which include a commemorative ball for Opening Day, 4th of July and for the 1st Anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 attacks on the United States. We're glad to finally get this ball into the Museum of Baseballs!
About the Event: Memorial Day is observed in the United States to commemorate U.S. soldiers who died while serving for the military. It's observed on the last Monday in May. Major League Baseball has often recognized major U.S. holidays and national observances by tying them into games which take place on the given holiday. This is the first and only year a commemorative Memorial Day Baseball was made. The same can be said for the 9/11 ball and the Labor Day ball. Opening Day Balls, in one form or another, have been used league-wide since 2000 (except for the 2003 season).
