BIG LEAGUE BASEBALLS.com | MUSEUM OF BASEBALLS | SPECIAL EVENT | Special Event Game Balls 1999 | BLB 1999 Milwaukee Brewers County Stadium Final Game Baseball
BigLeagueBaseballs.com finally acquired this rare ball thanks to a Milwaukee Brewers fan who snagged it at the final game of the Brewers season in 1999. This is in fact a game-used foul ball that was caught in the stands, and just recently sold to BigLeagueBaseballs.com!
This ball was recently discovered, and was not known to exist by us until 2011. These were used in 1999 when the Milwaukee Brewers played what was intended to be the last game ever at County Stadium on October 3, 1999 (it is possible these were used throughout that final series, but more than likely just the final game).
Due to delays in building Milwaukee's new stadium Miller Park, including a serious accident onsite, the Brewers were forced to play the 2000 season at County Stadium.
There are two more versions of County Stadium Final Game (or final series) baseballs, both pictured in the Museum. One is a second official ball, found in the 2000 Special Events Gallery. The other is possibly a prototype that was never used to our knowledge, also from the 2000 season, it's in the Miscellaeneous Gallery.
The tragic accident, in which the enourmous crane dubbed "Big Blue" collapsed and killed 3 construction workers, can be read about here.
So this is a rare specimen; we always wondered whether or not this ball had been made, since other stadium that closed in 1999 had baseballs made for their final games and series. We've only seen 3 total 1999 County Stadium baseballs, all game-used.
We're unsure if it was ever sold new in box / package like the other rare 1999 Stadium Baseballs were. This could very well be the rarest official game ball ever put into play - that is up for debate. If it was only used in one game and never sold, it's certainly in the top 10.
Technically it is the only special event for which two baseballs were made and used for the same purpose.
