Rawlings Special Event Official Game Baseballs include AL, NL and MLB balls with commemorative stamps. A wide variety were produced to commemorate special occasions for use in MLB games, beginning in 1991. These include Inaugural, Final Game & Season; Opening Day, Series & Game; Home Run Derby and All-Star Futures; Player Retirement, and many others.
Over 12 years passed from the first production of MLB commemorative game balls ('78 World Series) before the league mass-produced a regular season commemorative ball, the 1991 Comiskey Inaugural Season ball. However, we've recently discovered that 1991 ball wasn't the first; there may be others. Check the photos in this gallery for details.
In the late '90s, Major League Baseball and Rawlings began recognizing more historical events with commemorative baseballs. Three appeared in each '97 and '98, including the first and only dual league commemorative baseballs (shared logo - separate league balls), the first All-Star host-team edition ball, and the first and currently only expansion team Inaugural game balls.
